Panchakarma treatment, types & benefits

Panchakarma as the name itself suggests “Pancha” means five and “Karma” stands for procedure. Panchakarma in a simple language is five major procedures to be performed during treatment of an individual along with conservative medicines & can be performed on healthy individuals as well as those keen to stay healthy, active, and fit in the long run.

After proper consultations with your Ayurvedic physician, which is an assessment, they will suggest the best treatment for your overall health and well-being.

Ayurved works on the principle “Dosha Dhatu Mala Mulam hi Shareeram”, there are three doshas Vata, Pitta & Kapha, and seven Dhatu namely Rasa, Rakta, Mansa, Meda, Asthi, Majja, Shukra. So, in Panchakarma therapies, the elimination of the imbalanced state of doshas is done with different therapies, and that helps in the disease-free life ahead. Let’s dive deep into this ocean of Ayurveda where panchakarma is just one part of it.

Panchakarma is a set of five major procedures and then comes to the sub-procedures called Upkarmas.

The five major procedures namely Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya & Raktmokshan & its sub procedures include Snehan, Swedan, Patra pottlali sweda, Pind sweda, Shashti shali pind swedan, Shiro basti, Shirodhara, Janu dhara, Janu basti, Hirday basti etc.

Here is a detailed description of each of the Panchakarma:
1) Vamana

One among the five major therapies, Vamana means therapeutic vomiting which is a medicated emesis where vitiated kaph dosha is eliminated which removes toxins mainly from respiratory & GIT. Basant Ritu is best for Vamana karma as a seasonal detox but as suggested by your Ayurveda doctor can be done whenever needed for treatment.

2) Virechana
Virechana is controlled or medicated purgation, it’s best to flush out vitiated Pitta (heat-related) dosha out of the body. The heat of Sharad ritu (autumn) rises in India & virechana is the best thing you could do to your body preferably as a seasonal detox.

3) Basti
Basti eliminates the vitiated doshas (vaat) from the rectal route with the help of medicines that are administered through the rectal route are absorbed in the rectum & large intestines, the mode of action of basti as described by Aacharya in classical texts are ”trees, when irrigated at the root levels, shows healthy branches & beautiful fruits at the tips”, similarly when the body is treated with basti dravya at its root i.e. Anus, shows healing effect all over the body.

4) Nasya
Nasyam – Nose i.e. Nasal canal is the pathway to the head. Administration of medicine (oils or medicated herbal powder) in both nostrils is Nasya. Ayurvedic scripture Ashtang Hruday mentions “Nasa hi shirshso dwaram” which means that Nasal canal is the door to your head, the best preventive care for your skin, hair & all sensory organs. My preferred Anu tailam, oil for administration into both the nostrils is Dhootapapeshwar Anu Tail, that can be incorporated in your daily routine.

5) Raktamokshan
To simply break down these two words, Rakta is blood & Mokshan stands for letting, that is the technique of bloodletting. In the above all 4 major procedures doshas are to be eliminated, however in this procedure, the main aim is to eliminate the toxicity present in the blood along with doshas which have vitiated.

The benefits of Panchakarma
As stated above it gives benefits for both diseased and healthy individuals that can opt for Panchakarma. It aids in maintaining health and well-being, protects the body from future diseases, and prevents frequent illnesses when done correctly and periodically. It also restores the body’s energy and rejuvenates and repairs the daily wear & tear.
Therefore, therapies which are detoxifying in nature for your body are suggested according to the seasons, to bring balance and harmony in body and mind.
Basant Ritu (Spring season) – Vamana
Varsha Ritu (Rainy season) – Basti
Sharad Ritu (Autumn season) – Virechana and Raktamokshan

The utility of therapies is as below:
